Register for the Hegel Summer School in February 2009.

The theme for this year's school is: "Democracy: the new religion? Struggle, compromise and democratic faith".

Democracy is an ideal in struggles for global justice; it is something in
whose name war is waged and states are invaded; it is a code word for
capitalism and the market. Intense political theoretic debates currently
surround 'democracy'. What kind of democracy does Ruddism offer? What space is there for struggle and social movements? Does faith in democracy mean blind faith? We hope you will join us to explore the concepts and practices that have come to be associated with 'democracy' in the 21st century.

Hegel Summer School 2009 will be held on 20th and 21st February at the Graduate Centre, University of Melbourne.

HSS 2009 presenters are:
- Toula Nicolacopoulos: author of The Radical Critique of Liberalism
- Geoff Boucher and Matthew Sharp: authors of The Times Will Suit Them:
Postmodern Conservatism in Australia
- Rob Sparrow, Current debates in democracy theory
- Lynda Memery and Lisa Farrance: Struggle, compromise and modern social democracy

An introductory event will be held on the evening of 19th February, to
provide the opportunity for presenters and participants to meet in an
informal setting in advance of the school. To get us thinking and talking
about the school's theme, the evening will include a short presentation by Jorge Jorquera on Democracy and revolution in Latin America. The venue for this event has yet to be confirmed, but will be held at a bar near the University of Melbourne.

Further program and registration details are available at the HSS website.

Registration for 21st-22nd February is $60, or $30 unwaged (the event is fully catered). Registration for the introductory evening on 19th February is $10, or $5 unwaged (snacks will be provided, and drinks can be purchased at the bar).

In February 2008 a group of locals got together to see what they could do to reduce their impact on the environment, strengthen community and build resilience to upcoming environmental challenges.

And what better way to achieve this than to have a day open to all that showcases sustainable living practices.

So on Saturday 22nd November from 9am to 1pm, the Sustainability Group will be holding Sustainability Day in the Trentham town square.

There will be a number of great displays and you can learn what you can do to reduce your impact on our environment.

On the day you can:
Pick up a free show bag that contains examples of sustainable living practices and some great product samples

Jump on a bus and take a tour of 4 sustainable houses around Trentham and see what others have done to reduce their environmental footprints.  Buses leave from the town square at 10am and 1pm promptly and the tour runs for approximately 2 1/2 hours.  You can pre-book a seat or turn up – you’ll be amazed at what you see in your own backyard.

Sign up for the opportunity to have all your suitable household lightglobes replaced free of charge by Envirosaver.

Check out the SolaHart Solar Hot Water display, where you can talk to an expert and take advantage of a special offer to receive a $300 discount on a new unit.  To take up this special offer you will need to get the Trentham Sustainability Day code available on the day.

Purchase some local produce from the Food Miles stall, with all products sourced from with 30km of Trentham

Look at the Solar Power display by the SolarShop to see how you can reduce your power bill, it is easier than you think!

Get a close up look at a hybrid car

As well as other displays and entertainment
and
Find out about our plans for a community garden, you may even want to get involved!

Finally, don’t forget the organic BBQ with great sausages being cooked up by Ian & Lyn.

Entry is by gold coin donation and all funds raised will be used in future sustainability projects.

We look forward to seeing you there and hope you come along and see how easy it is to make a difference.

Warburton Rally PosterCome and protest against logging in Melbourne's water catchements.

Meet on Sunday 23 Nov 2008 at 11:45am at the Story Reserve, at the rotunda, next to Swing Bridge (near the Tennis courts), Warburton Hwy, Warburton.
Melways Ref Map 290 A4

Just over 1 hour from Melbourne/15minutes from Warburton logging is scheduled in Melbourne's pristine Cement & Armstrong Creek Water Catchments.

Join the Warburton Community, the Yarra Ranges Shire Council, Melburnians and Environmental Groups as they walk through Warburton to demonstrate opposition to the logging of our water catchments.

Melbourne's water catchments are being logged at an alarming rate over time with water losses equal to 68,000 households usage every year. Melbourne and regional Victoria are facing dramatic drought conditions and worsening with climate change with 30% less water flowing into streams.
Logging is taking place in these catchments to provide woodchips to make paper and this logging is being heavily subsidised by taxpayers. 50% of water yield is lost when a forest is logged. Our water catchments are the most carbon-dense forests on Earth.

Come join your Yarra Ranges/Melbourne/Warburton community and celebrate the role native forests play in; providing clean water supply, regulating our global climate & housing a myriad of threatened species.

How to get there in a climate friendly way:
bus: FoE is organising a bus.

To book a seat on the FoE bus; contact the office on 9419 8700 (ask for Lauren, Mara or Cam) or email.

The bus costs $15 returnand departs Friends of the Earth, 312 Smith St Collingwood, at 9.30am
OR
Train: Catch the Lilydale train from Melbourne and then jump on a Warburton bound bus from Lilydale station.
OR
Catch the train with your bike to Lilydale and then jump on the Warburton Trail - this trail is 40 kms, so allow plenty of time to get
to the rally on time. -

Come to this art exhibition in Federation Square - featuring the work of sixty artists of ethnic origins who are differently abled.

Where: The Atrium, Federation Square When: Wednesday 26 November to Tuesday 2 December.

A unique and vibrant art exhibition will be on show in the Atrium at Federation Square during November 26 to December 2, 2008.

There are 120 exceptional paintings, drawings and sketches exploring the theme of the “Journey” - the sights, sensations and memories that make every journey personal.

This public exhibition is purely about artistic expression and the pure joy for the painter to have the opportunity to have their work seen by thousands of people from all walks of life; ADEC ArtAbility 2008 provides men, women and children from fringe cultural corners of Melbourne the chance to transcend difficulties by communicating visually in a professional way.

ADEC ArtAbility is an event showcasing exciting, colourful work from artists at the end of this month.

Leading award winning contemporary artist and teacher (Latrobe Art College & Victoria University), David Ralph will be judging the exhibition and awarding prizes. He said, “My gut reaction to the work that I have seen so far, is that the paintings are wonderfully unselfconscious. They are intuitive and meditative and made with enjoyment; there is a sense of love, fun and timelessness to the work. There are various styles peaking through this exhibition from modernist, Arte Brut, Impressionism and Fauvism. It’s an honour to be invited to be a part of this special event”.

The 60 artists live in various pockets of Melbourne who have origins in places such as Somalia, Europe, obscure countries in the Pacific Islands, China, Russia, Japan, Greece, Iraq, Africa and so on. ADEC have co-ordinated this exhibition tapping into the schools and organisations who work with intellectually and physically challenged people. What: ADEC Artability 2008 - 120 paintings on canvas, drawings and illustrations presented by artists from ethnic origins.

On Friday 28 November ArtAbility will host a Gala Opening and Art Auction to celebrity guests, high profile artists from Melbourne, Government officials and community groups and art fans from all over Melbourne. Organisers are expecting 400 guests at the opening. The paintings can be bought by the public and there will be awards given to the top three artworks selected by David Ralph. Other special guests contributing to this exhibition are, Australian Ambassador for International Day for Disability, Milly Parker and Paralympic swimmer, Hannah MacDougall. Public are welcome.

ADEC (Action on Disability within Ethnic Communities) presents this exhibition coordinating the various communities. They are a not for profit organisation working with over 40 different nationalities and cultural groups.

Former Guantanamo Detainee, Mamdouh Habib, is speaking in Melbourne on..

6:30pm Wednesday 3rd of December
Trades Hall, Victoria

Mamdouh Habib has been one of the many victims of the War on Terror.

Branded a terrorist, Habib was arrested in 2001 and imprisoned and tortured in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Egypt, before being sent to Guantanamo Bay for 2 years, alongside David Hicks.

It was here he was tortured by US soldiers, heavily drugged, deprived of sleep for weeks, beaten, given electric shocks, repeatedly injected with a needle in the same place so that it became terribly painful, left naked in freezing rooms for hours on end in isolation and threatened with rape.
In 2005 he was released without any charge.

Upon returning to Australia, Habib and his family have suffered police surveillance, threats of violence, and even assault by NSW police, yet received no compensation.

This special meeting will feature Mamdouh Habib discussing his new book and giving a first hand account of the brutality of the United States, and will expose the War on Terror for being a War OF Terror.

Panel also includes:

Rob Stary
Civil Liberties lawyer involved in defending "terror" suspects Jack Thomas, and members of the Barwon 12

Vashti Kenway
Leading member of Socialist Alternative

Sponsored by Socialist Alternative

NATION-WIDE PROTESTS: Sat Dec 13

Melbourne 12 Noon @ State Library

Together we can stop this legislation and preserve freedom of speech online.

The Australian Federal Government is pushing forward with a plan to
force Internet Service Providers [ISPs] to censor the Internet for all
Australians. This plan will waste tens of millions of taxpayer dollars
and slow down Internet access.

Despite being almost universally condemned by the public, ISPs, State
Governments, Media and censorship experts, Communications Minister
Stephen Conroy is determined to force this filter into your home.

For more information visit Australians Against Internet Censorship
(AAIC) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=35119201737&ref=mf

The Australian government is planning to implement internet filtering at the ISP level. This internet filter will work in much the same way as the freely available filters for adult content which can already be downloaded by the public for personal use. The proposed filter will be intended to block content with a MA15+ rating or higher. Websites deemed to host illegal content will also be blocked. A blacklist of websites deemed unsuitable for public viewing has already been produced, this list is at present not available to the public. The dangerous concern is that any website the government disapproves of can easily be added to this list. Regardless of whether or not you trust the current government, there are no safeguards in place to prevent future governments from exploiting this list and adding websites that oppose their own personal ideals.

In order to pass this legislation it is likely that gambling websites will also be blocked. The cost of this technology is believed to be $45 million for the initial setup and then an additional $33 million per annum.

On the 28th of July the Australian government released a report detailing the results of a trial of six potential filters. The report included the following statistics.

Internet speeds dropped between 21% and 86%. The most accurate filter was also the one with the greatest drop in speed.

Content that the filters failed to block ranged from 2% to 13%.

Content blocked by mistake ranged from 1.3% to 7.8%

The type of websites blocked by accident may include websites on issues such as sexual health or breast cancer. Legitimate websites unfortunate enough to be hosted on a web-server with adult content are also likely to be blocked. Websites which are hacked or spammed with porn will again be blocked. Hate websites and websites deemed to be inciting criminal activity will be blocked, this may include websites promoting euthanasia or file sharing.

If your website is blocked the you will have to appeal the decision with an Administrative appeals tribunal. The exact process has yet to be disclosed.

This legislation will not protect children. If anything this legislation is more likely to harm children than protect them. Parents are likely to be lured into a false sense of security. Bypassing internet filters has been proven to be notoriously easy for children.

Of greater concern is the possibility that such a filter would encourage paedophiles to start using programs that make it more difficult for them to be tracked. This would hamper the efforts of the police in tracking paedophiles online.

An internet filter will do nothing to combat the production and uploading of Child Pornography.

The internet filter will not block P2P networks which are where the majority of file sharing occurs.

If the Australian government wants to stop child sexual abuse then the money for this legislation should be spent on Federal police programs designed to target the producers of such material

Let your federal MP know how you feel about this issue. Speaking directly to them will have the greatest effect. Letters will help too especially handwritten ones. Be careful not to insult or offend them, even if they are a sitting member of the labor party, they may not necessarily agree with this policy.

An official petition is available at http://www.wakinggiant.org/au_censorship.htm. The petition is open to all Australian citizens. Make sure that the people who sign it add their address, failing to do so may render a signature void.

Join Australians Against Internet Censorship.(AAIC). We are a non-political non-profit group dedicated to stopping this legislation from being passed. We are working at raising awareness of this issue and organising protests to show the public opposition to this legislation. You can find us at http://www.nocleanfeedforum.com

Solidarity with Greece: Rally for Alexandros Grigoropoulos

Outside the Greek Consulate

37-29 Albert Road, South Melbourne (take St Kilda Rd trams)

Alexandros Grigoropoulos

On Saturday 6th of December at around 10pm, two Greek policemen were in patrol in a central street by Exarchia square, in the center of Athens. They had a verbal argument with some young people who were there. During the argument, one of the cops pulled his gun and shot a 16-year-old minor twice. The victim was moved to Evangelismos Hospital to be pronounced dead. According to eye-witnesses, the cop had been swearing against the young boy, and showing his genitals, before shooting him. In a spontaneous response, thousands of people gathered in the centers of most Greek cities over the past three days in riots. In Athens, people gathered outside Evangelismos Hospital, in order to prevent the cops from entering the building. A little later the riot police attacked in a street in Exarchia resulting in one person being arrested. The evening in Athens evolved with a spontaneous assembly in the Polytechnic University, many rioted in the center of Athens, including attacks against police departments and banks, until the early hours of the next morning. Meanwhile, a spontaneous demonstration took place, but it was confronted by the riot police with tear gas. Rallies, demonstrations, direct actions and riots took place all around the country. Solidarity actions have already been held around Greece, in London, Edinburgh, Berlin, and Vienna. There is a planned rally/vigil for Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Melbourne – the city with the biggest Greek population outside of Greece.

The North-South pipeline: Melbourne – it’s time to take a stand!
====

Please join our community action - Sunday December 14, on the pipeline construction site in Toolangi forest.

This short-sighted project will pump 75 billion litres of water a year from the Goulburn River, the major Victorian tributary of the Murray, to supply Melbourne. The media to date has shown protests and rallies by rural communities whose land and livelihoods are being damaged. But the government says the pipeline is being built to benefit us in Melbourne. We must ask ourselves:

* Do we really need it?
* What are its impacts?
* What else can we do to meet our water needs?

Please join us for a peaceful Walk On to the pipeline construction site to show that Melbourne people care. We do not want scarce resources drawn from dry catchments simply because the state government lacks the courage and foresight to deal with Melbourne’s water needs responsibly and honestly.

When: Sunday, December 14

Where: Meet at 11am SHARP at the corner of the Melba Highway and the Healesville – Kinglake Rd (Melways Key Map, Page 10 P2 or Day Tours Page 910 Q11). We will convoy/car-pool the last few kilometres to the construction site. Allow about 70 minutes drive from inner Melbourne.

What: We will walk on to the pipe construction site to witness the clearing of Toolangi State Forest, and hear from locals who will explain the ecological impacts of the proposed pipeline which will cut through 12 kilometres of the forest between Glenburn and Yarra Glen.

Then join us at 1pm for a picnic by the Yea River at Glenburn (turn left at Glenburn Hotel, follow for 100m), to catch up, ask questions and hear from people involved in the Plug the Pipe. BYO food & drink.

Aim: To send a message to the state government that people in Melbourne as well as country Victoria care about the real cost of this project. We do not need this $750+ million pipeline.

* Government should not be removing water from stressed catchments
north of the Great Divide
* There are many other more sustainable and long term options to
meet our growing water needs, without this pipeline
* Melbourne – it’s time we stood up against this destructive project!

This will mark the launch of a new alliance. We will focus on opposing construction of the southern end of the pipeline, as it crashes through Toolangi State Forest and the Yarra Valley and mobilising Melbourne people on this important issue.

Further information: Cam Walker, 03 9419 8700, 0419 338 047 or email.
Please car pool to reduce emissions. Also there is limited space to park. If you can offer or need a ride, please contact Cam.

BUY MORE STUFF! will make its world debut in Big W, Myer and other stores on Thursday Dec 18 during the evening shopping hours.

This is a foolish and ironically intended anthem to consumerism, in the tradition of "vote the bastards out": see youtube clip

17-12-2008  Here is the latest update from flashmob organiser extraordinaire Stephen Taberner:
"I am happy to announce that we had a perfectly grand musical congress at the rehearsal last night, so thanks to everybody who restacked their christmas season to make it. the song is sounding awesome and thus I pronounce us to be in readiness for the big event on thursday.

we will meet at 5pm outside the state library, which is on the corner of swanston and latrobe. apparently the chance of rain is 40%, so I think 40% of us should bring an umbrella. if we move to an indoor location, we will leave a sentry to redirect you. we aim to run through the song till soon after 6, when the whole pesky event will begin in earnest.

current plans for flashmob locations include outside Big W in the QV, bourke st mall, melbourne central and the manchester section at myer. please email any excellent further ideas to me, and also if you are going to be late, get a mobile number of someone who is going so you can find us!

please wear city-ish kind of gear. suits for men would be wonderful. we are supposed to be shoppers on the way home from work in the city. and you have to look pretty for the camera, which will be manned by pete. I was most remiss to not introduce him to you last night, so apologies for that.

new singers and those who couldn't make thursday are most cordially welcome so long as they get there for the 5pm rehearsal and they have done some listening to the mp3s first. if it helps I can email you a jpg of the dots for the song.

ah, um. that's it! it shall be grand, and I am most thermulously thingly about the whole thing. see you down there.

respectfully
stephen"

These files are fully panned with the target part to the left and all others to the right. To listen to your part, turn the balance control (you can do this even on a mac for example under system preferences/sound) fully to the left, or if you have headphones, take one off. Then you can readjust to hear more of the others when you are confident.

$4 a day for VNPA members and $8 for visitors

Throughout the year the Victorian National Parks Association organises hundreds of great bushwalks. Apart from being a great way to meet people the walks are also an excellent way of learning more about Victoria’s natural environment.

This is a public transport trip to one of the newer walking tracks near Melbourne. We start with a steep climb to take us up to the old aqueduct, but, after that, it is level or downhill all the way. Some great views and outlooks, lovely forest, and we will also walk along one of the not quite finished sections of the walk, which will eventually be 70 km long. We will also cross both the Dee and Yarra Rivers on our way to Millgrove.

GRADE: easy/medium 16 km
Limit 20. 80 km E Melb.

A professionally trained nurse, Starr squeezed in another career documenting environmental activism, the plight of independent coffee producers and, most recently, the rising sea levels off the Carteret Islands.

A selection of his films feature in this program, including Fight for Country: The Story of the Jabiluka Blockade (62 mins, Australia, 2001), Through the Wire (10 mins, Australia, 2004) and The Okapa Connection (15 mins, Australia, 2006).

Some of Starr's supporters including Gary Foley and Dave Sweeney (Australian Conservation Foundation) will introduce the screenings.
