Register for the Hegel Summer School in February 2009.

The theme for this year's school is: "Democracy: the new religion? Struggle, compromise and democratic faith".

Democracy is an ideal in struggles for global justice; it is something in
whose name war is waged and states are invaded; it is a code word for
capitalism and the market. Intense political theoretic debates currently
surround 'democracy'. What kind of democracy does Ruddism offer? What space is there for struggle and social movements? Does faith in democracy mean blind faith? We hope you will join us to explore the concepts and practices that have come to be associated with 'democracy' in the 21st century.

Hegel Summer School 2009 will be held on 20th and 21st February at the Graduate Centre, University of Melbourne.

HSS 2009 presenters are:
- Toula Nicolacopoulos: author of The Radical Critique of Liberalism
- Geoff Boucher and Matthew Sharp: authors of The Times Will Suit Them:
Postmodern Conservatism in Australia
- Rob Sparrow, Current debates in democracy theory
- Lynda Memery and Lisa Farrance: Struggle, compromise and modern social democracy

An introductory event will be held on the evening of 19th February, to
provide the opportunity for presenters and participants to meet in an
informal setting in advance of the school. To get us thinking and talking
about the school's theme, the evening will include a short presentation by Jorge Jorquera on Democracy and revolution in Latin America. The venue for this event has yet to be confirmed, but will be held at a bar near the University of Melbourne.

Registration for 21st-22nd February is $60, or $30 unwaged (the event is fully catered). Registration for the introductory evening on 19th February is $10, or $5 unwaged (snacks will be provided, and drinks can be purchased at the bar).
