The Moreland Energy Foundation (MEFL) is running a series of FREE workshops for the Moreland community to households reduce their greenhouse pollution. ‘Calculate your carbon footprint’ and ‘Green Renovations’ workshops will be held at different locations across the municipality and are for anyone who lives and works in Moreland and wants to know more about reducing their impact on the environment. “The Calculate your Carbon Footprint workshops are a great opportunity for households to understand what their carbon footprint looks like and learn how they can reduce it.” MEFL CEO Paul Murfitt said. “The workshops will assist participants to assess their home and activities, estimate their current greenhouse pollution and identify what actions they can take straight away or plan for in the future.” All workshops are free and participants receive a free kit with some great tools and products to help your household reduce its carbon footprint.” Residents can also attend a free Green Renovations workshop and hear from some local experienced renovators about what they have done to make their homes environmentally sustainable. A workshop, called “Issues at Play”, at the Northern Notes Writer’s Festival, will include a reading by professional actors of 1hr-length play “Peccadilloes” by local emerging playwright Judy Doubas. It tells the story of one woman’s journey through domestic violence. After the play reading, an open forum with the actors, writer and the CEO of Domestic Violence Crisis Services, Jean Cameron will be conducted to discuss the relevance and effectiveness of the genre of playwriting to explore and inform an audience about often contentious social issues. There will be an opportunity to discuss both the issues presented and to make comparisons with other forms of writing such as journalistic articles and essays, novels and short stories. These questions will be posed. Can a play shape public opinion, awake emotions, stimulate thought and enlighten as well as amuse and entertain? Does showing and not just telling engage an audience/ reader more profoundly and on a deeper level? Judy Doubas has been passionate about theatre all her life. From dabbling in acting and directing, she began writing plays three years ago, to reflect upon and give meaning to, contemporary social issues that effect us all. She writes with a serious intent and some humour. ‘Peccadilloes’ is her first full length play, but there are more in the making. Her ten minute plays have been produced at Footscray Arts Centre, Dantes and Dandenong Short and Sweet Festival. Her ten minute play “Black Eyed Susan”, a black comedy about cancer, is being produced at the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio, as one of the Top 20 in the Short and Sweet Festival in December. She has a Diploma in Drama and a Diploma in Education Drama/English. The actors at play are Bobbi-Lea Dionysis, Stefan Cooper-Fox, Nick Fox, Rosie Rodiadis and Scott Mc Ateer. “Issues at Play” is supported by NNWF, Women’s Health in the North, Darebin Domestic Violence Project and Domestic Violence Crisis Service. In February 2008 a group of locals got together to see what they could do to reduce their impact on the environment, strengthen community and build resilience to upcoming environmental challenges. And what better way to achieve this than to have a day open to all that showcases sustainable living practices. So on Saturday 22nd November from 9am to 1pm, the Sustainability Group will be holding Sustainability Day in the Trentham town square. There will be a number of great displays and you can learn what you can do to reduce your impact on our environment. On the day you can: Pick up a free show bag that contains examples of sustainable living practices and some great product samples Jump on a bus and take a tour of 4 sustainable houses around Trentham and see what others have done to reduce their environmental footprints. Buses leave from the town square at 10am and 1pm promptly and the tour runs for approximately 2 1/2 hours. You can pre-book a seat or turn up – you’ll be amazed at what you see in your own backyard. Sign up for the opportunity to have all your suitable household lightglobes replaced free of charge by Envirosaver. This small monthly community market that we started up in September to promote local arts and crafts and to raise money for the local primary school as well as offering the local Scouts, Girl Guides and Fire Brigade a chance to raise some funds by running sausage sizzles. The market is held at The Basin Primary School cnr Mountain Highway and Liverpool Road The Basin. The upcoming dates are Sunday November 30th and Sunday December 14th, 9am - 2pm. There's free entry and plenty of free parking and all the stalls stock handmade or homegrown products. The variety is huge and includes; Soy Candles, cards, decorated boxes, beaded jewellery, kids bag tags, kids door hangers, mummy calling cards, fridge memos, photography, print you childs artwork, ceramics, applique cushions, kids aprons, kids bags, baby rompers, nursery art, knitter toys and dools clothes, knitted booties, japanese paper art, dichroic jewellery, wooden toys, heat bags, original paintings, wood-turned giftware, cadbury chocolate houses, handmade christmas decorations, beeswax candles, handmade soaps, salt lamps, herb and vegetable seedlings, planter boxes, plants, childrens plaques, handmade childrens shoes, patchwork and crotched face washers, handtowels & animal booties. The December market will also have a special guest appearance by Santa and Christmas Carols sung by the students of The Basin Primary School.

ADEC ArtAbility is an event showcasing exciting, colourful work from artists at the end of this month. Leading award winning contemporary artist and teacher (Latrobe Art College & Victoria University), David Ralph will be judging the exhibition and awarding prizes. He said, “My gut reaction to the work that I have seen so far, is that the paintings are wonderfully unselfconscious. They are intuitive and meditative and made with enjoyment; there is a sense of love, fun and timelessness to the work. There are various styles peaking through this exhibition from modernist, Arte Brut, Impressionism and Fauvism. It’s an honour to be invited to be a part of this special event”. The 60 artists live in various pockets of Melbourne who have origins in places such as Somalia, Europe, obscure countries in the Pacific Islands, China, Russia, Japan, Greece, Iraq, Africa and so on. ADEC have co-ordinated this exhibition tapping into the schools and organisations who work with intellectually and physically challenged people. On Friday 28 November ArtAbility will host a Gala Opening and Art Auction to celebrity guests, high profile artists from Melbourne, Government officials and community groups and art fans from all over Melbourne. Organisers are expecting 400 guests at the opening. The paintings can be bought by the public and there will be awards given to the top three artworks selected by David Ralph. Other special guests contributing to this exhibition are, Australian Ambassador for International Day for Disability, Milly Parker and Paralympic swimmer, Hannah MacDougall. Public are welcome. In the heat of a global economic meltdown, more than 250 anti-capitalist activists met over four days in San Francisco to discuss The Persistent Power of Socialist Feminism and chart a course of action. This was Radical Women’s 41st international anniversary conference, held October 3 – 6 at the historic Women’s Building. Melbourne participants brought back the experience and excitement to a report-back event, and people are talking about how the ideas can be applied to Australia. Spend an informal afternoon to meet others and discuss how we can act do together on today’s burning issues and bring on real change. Bring your ideas and a dish to share. The Rotary Club of Footscray, in partnership with Ethio-Australian Sports Federation, Victoria Police and Footscray United Soccer Club Inc. are hosting the African Cup charity game on Sunday 7 December 2008. The match pits a combined side made up from Victoria Police and the Footscray United Soccer Club, featuring Publicis' own Rob Tripp, against an Ethiopian side from the local community. There will also be two games played amongst the African community. The event aims to develop relationships within the local community, increase the opportunities for the African community to participate in physical activity, create greater community collaboration in sport and recreation programs, and ensure that population groups with special needs (people of non-English speaking backgrounds) can access programs and services across our suburbs. The day will feature a BBQ sausage sizzle, canteen sales and African music. Proceeds on the day will go to the Rotary Club to support programs that will help engage and support the African community.
