The Latin American & Australasian Indigenous Solidarity Gathering,
23-26 October 2008, Melbourne - Australia

For our LAND, our CULTURE, our SOVEREIGNTY... Protecting our planet, defending our communities!

Our Call>> The Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET), Friends of the Earth (FOE) in conjunction with other solidarity organisations will be hosting a gathering for Indigenous and non-Indigenous activists who are supporting Indigenous resistances and struggles.

We hope to bring together activists, indigenous leaders and communities from Aotearoa (New Zealand), Great Turtle Island (North America), the Pacific Islands, and our Indigenous brothers and sisters from Latin America, as well as from the Aboriginal nations of Australia.

This is a time of great struggle for Indigenous peoples. On September 13th 2007, the governments of Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia voted against the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which calls on countries to give more control to tribal peoples over the land and resources they traditionally possessed, and to return confiscated territory, pay compensation, or just say “sorry” for all the abuses.

It is not hard to see why. New Zealand’s government has just unleashed its anti-terror security forces on Maori activists in New Zealand, while the Australian government reinvaded Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory under the guise of “child” protection. Both these governments use their influence in the Pacific to open up communal lands in Aboriginal nations as well as Pacific Island nations to Australian and Canadian mining interests.

Throughout the Americas, from Great Turtle Island down through Latin America, from the Tahltan of Canada to the Mapuche of Chile/Argentina, from the Quechua /Aymara  to the Kulin, Wotjobaluk, Mara and Kurnai Nations of Australia in the south, Indigenous peoples are under greater pressure than ever from multinational corporations’ interests (mining, forestry, fuel), free trade agreements and the security apparatus of settler governments, determined to finally put an end to centuries of struggle against dominant elites and against economic rationalism in the form of neoliberal capital policies.

Indigenous peoples are fighting back, organising, and teaching new generations what they have learned from hundreds of years of unending struggle against land expropriation, exploitation, assimilation and the various attempts to wipe them out from our planet.

Gathering (Encuentro)/Conference Contents>>

The Gathering (Encuentro) aims to build bridges of struggle, friendship and collaboration between Indigenous and grassroots organisations throughout Latin America and Australasia.

During the first two days of the Gathering (October 23 and 24) there will be a welcome to country and a public meeting. The second two days (October 25 and 26) will feature plenary sessions, workshops, documentary films, photo exhibitions, stalls and other activities.

Participants from Australia and overseas will explore the questions of WHY and HOW we resist and struggle to protect our planet and defend our communities, and WHAT we propose as Indigenous people and supporters from grassroots and community organisations to achieve social transformation..

Topics to be discussed include:
Genocide suffered by Aboriginal nations
Autonomous struggles
Ancestral rights to land and culture
Sovereignty and the global order
Sovereignty and neo-liberal policies
Land sovereignty and nation
Aboriginal control of Aboriginal affairs
Human rights/Aboriginal rights
Fighting racism
Peace
Treaty or/and reconciliation, and
Other topics presented by Gathering participants.

Our idea is to be open and inclusive to ideas and discourses supporting Indigenous peoples’ self-determination and grassroots struggles for justice, peace, dignity and democracy from below. We would like to develop the concept of an alliance between Indigenous and non- Indigenous marginalised people as they share similar problems of exclusion, exploitation, racism, repression.

We are inviting individuals and organisations to support this initiative by contributing to our organising fund, and by supporting the Gathering itself when it takes place October 2008.

Costs are significant as there are several international airfares to cover, and therefore any contributions would be appreciated.

If your organisation be able to provide some assistance or be interested to becoming a Gathering supporter or sponsor write to us to P.OBOX 813 North Melbourne, VIC. 3051 or email.

Solidarity Gathering/Encuentro presented by: Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET) & Friends of the Earth (FOE) In conjunction with: Aboriginal organisations from Victoria and other cities, ANTAR, Union Solidarity, Community Radio 3CR, AISD, MASN, FREE WEST PAPUA, FAIRWEAR CAMPAIGN, Pro-Bolivia Sydney, Chilean popular and Indigenous Network, Colombia Solidarity Network, Colombia demand Justice Campaign and Others...

ISSUES AT PLAY

6pm-8pm, 8th November.
Northcote Town Hall.

A workshop, called “Issues at Play”, at the Northern Notes Writer’s Festival, will include a reading by professional actors of 1hr-length play “Peccadilloes” by local emerging playwright Judy Doubas. It tells the story of one woman’s journey through domestic violence.

After the play reading, an open forum with the actors, writer and the CEO of Domestic Violence Crisis Services, Jean Cameron will be conducted to discuss the relevance and effectiveness of the genre of playwriting to explore and inform an audience about often contentious social issues.

There will be an opportunity to discuss both the issues presented and to make comparisons with other forms of writing such as journalistic articles and essays, novels and short stories.  These questions will be posed. Can a play shape public opinion, awake emotions, stimulate thought and enlighten as well as amuse and entertain? Does showing and not just telling engage an audience/ reader more profoundly and on a deeper level?

Judy Doubas has been passionate about theatre all her life. From dabbling in acting and directing, she began writing plays three years ago, to reflect upon and give meaning to, contemporary social issues that effect us all. She writes with a serious intent and some humour.  ‘Peccadilloes’ is her first full length play, but there are more in the making. Her ten minute plays have been produced at Footscray Arts Centre, Dantes and Dandenong Short and Sweet Festival. Her ten minute play “Black Eyed Susan”, a black comedy about cancer, is being produced at the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio, as one of the Top 20 in the Short and Sweet Festival in December. She has a Diploma in Drama and a Diploma in Education Drama/English.

The actors at play are Bobbi-Lea Dionysis, Stefan Cooper-Fox, Nick Fox, Rosie Rodiadis and Scott Mc Ateer.

“Issues at Play” is supported by NNWF, Women’s Health in the North, Darebin Domestic Violence Project and Domestic Violence Crisis Service.

ImageHelp raise money for 3CR's Connolly Association and see Hunger, a new film about IRA hunger striker, Bobby Sands.

For six weeks in 1981, Bobby Sands went without food in an action initiated to demand that IRA prisoners be treated as political prisoners, not criminals.

Directed by Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen, Hunger takes an uncompromising look at life inside the Maze prison and the last six weeks in Bobby Sands' life. After 66 days without food, Sands died at the Maze prison in Northern Ireland at the age of 27.

Register for the Hegel Summer School in February 2009.

The theme for this year's school is: "Democracy: the new religion? Struggle, compromise and democratic faith".

Democracy is an ideal in struggles for global justice; it is something in
whose name war is waged and states are invaded; it is a code word for
capitalism and the market. Intense political theoretic debates currently
surround 'democracy'. What kind of democracy does Ruddism offer? What space is there for struggle and social movements? Does faith in democracy mean blind faith? We hope you will join us to explore the concepts and practices that have come to be associated with 'democracy' in the 21st century.

Hegel Summer School 2009 will be held on 20th and 21st February at the Graduate Centre, University of Melbourne.

HSS 2009 presenters are:
- Toula Nicolacopoulos: author of The Radical Critique of Liberalism
- Geoff Boucher and Matthew Sharp: authors of The Times Will Suit Them:
Postmodern Conservatism in Australia
- Rob Sparrow, Current debates in democracy theory
- Lynda Memery and Lisa Farrance: Struggle, compromise and modern social democracy

An introductory event will be held on the evening of 19th February, to
provide the opportunity for presenters and participants to meet in an
informal setting in advance of the school. To get us thinking and talking
about the school's theme, the evening will include a short presentation by Jorge Jorquera on Democracy and revolution in Latin America. The venue for this event has yet to be confirmed, but will be held at a bar near the University of Melbourne.

Further program and registration details are available at the HSS website.

Registration for 21st-22nd February is $60, or $30 unwaged (the event is fully catered). Registration for the introductory evening on 19th February is $10, or $5 unwaged (snacks will be provided, and drinks can be purchased at the bar).

For inquiries please email.

The 11th Hegel Summer School is kindly supported by the Melbourne School of Graduate Research.

In February 2008 a group of locals got together to see what they could do to reduce their impact on the environment, strengthen community and build resilience to upcoming environmental challenges.

And what better way to achieve this than to have a day open to all that showcases sustainable living practices.

So on Saturday 22nd November from 9am to 1pm, the Sustainability Group will be holding Sustainability Day in the Trentham town square.

There will be a number of great displays and you can learn what you can do to reduce your impact on our environment.

On the day you can:
Pick up a free show bag that contains examples of sustainable living practices and some great product samples

Jump on a bus and take a tour of 4 sustainable houses around Trentham and see what others have done to reduce their environmental footprints.  Buses leave from the town square at 10am and 1pm promptly and the tour runs for approximately 2 1/2 hours.  You can pre-book a seat or turn up – you’ll be amazed at what you see in your own backyard.

Sign up for the opportunity to have all your suitable household lightglobes replaced free of charge by Envirosaver.

Check out the SolaHart Solar Hot Water display, where you can talk to an expert and take advantage of a special offer to receive a $300 discount on a new unit.  To take up this special offer you will need to get the Trentham Sustainability Day code available on the day.

Purchase some local produce from the Food Miles stall, with all products sourced from with 30km of Trentham

Look at the Solar Power display by the SolarShop to see how you can reduce your power bill, it is easier than you think!

Get a close up look at a hybrid car

As well as other displays and entertainment
and
Find out about our plans for a community garden, you may even want to get involved!

Finally, don’t forget the organic BBQ with great sausages being cooked up by Ian & Lyn.

Entry is by gold coin donation and all funds raised will be used in future sustainability projects.

We look forward to seeing you there and hope you come along and see how easy it is to make a difference.

Melbourne's water catchments are being logged at an alarming rate over time with water losses equal to 68,000 households usage every year. Melbourne and regional Victoria are facing dramatic drought conditions and worsening with climate change with 30% less water flowing into streams.
Logging is taking place in these catchments to provide woodchips to make paper and this logging is being heavily subsidised by taxpayers. 50% of water yield is lost when a forest is logged. Our water catchments are the most carbon-dense forests on Earth.

Come join your Yarra Ranges/Melbourne/Warburton community and celebrate the role native forests play in; providing clean water supply, regulating our global climate & housing a myriad of threatened species.
