More about the events:
ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE:
THE AIDEX ’91 STORY
In November 1991 over 1000 protesters blockaded the National Exhibition Centre in Canberra for 12 days with the aim of shutting down the Australia International Defence Exhibition. AIDEX ’91 saw the most police violence and highest number of arrests in the Australian Capital Territory since the Vietnam era. Although the exhibition was eventually able to go ahead the blockade caused enough disruption to ensure that no one would dare hold another arms fair on this scale in Australia again. The success of the protest came at a cost however with hundreds of demonstrators injured and their actions vilified in the mainstream media.

Alongside a detailed account of the protest itself Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life: The AIDEX ’91 Story traces the background of the blockade amidst the growth of opposition to the Australian arms industry during the 1980s. Using the words of the protesters themselves the book also explores the lessons of AIDEX ’91, the effect of the protest on a
generation of Australian activists and the way in which similar strategies were used to stop the 2008 Asia Pacific Defence and Security Exhibition from occurring. The book features many photos from both the AIDEX ’89 and ’91 protests.

Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life will be available on the night or can be purchased in Melbourne from Sticky, Friends Of The Earth, The New International Bookshop and Polyester books and will be available in Sydney from Jura and Black Rose books in the coming weeks. The book can also be purchased on line from foe.org.au/shop/ or www.newinternationalbookshop.org.au

PINE GAP 2002
From October 5th to 7th 2002 around 500 demonstrators participated in a range of actions aimed at shutting down the Pine Gap US spy base. Located just 19 km from Alice Springs the installation has played a major role in US military satellite activities since the 1960s. Its past operations have included the targeting of bombs during the 1990-91 US war on Iraq and, most recently, the targeting of US bombs against Afghanistan and Iraq.
Three days of protest included a blockade of the road leading into the base, speeches from local indigenous representatives, street theatre, attempts to enter Pine Gap itself and a street parade through Alice Springs. The latest documentary from Box 4 follows the campaign from its early organising meetings through to the protest itself.

ASIA PACIFIC DEFENCE AND SECURITY EXHIBITION (APDSE) 2008
On Remembrance Day November 11 2008 the South Australian Government and
private company APDS Exhibition Ltd had planned to hold Australia’s first major arms fair in 17 years at the Adelaide Convention Centre. With groups meeting around Australia to organise a Peace Festival and a blockade the APDSE organisers, citing police costs, threw in the towel cancelling the event in early September. Come and celebrate this victory for the peace movement.

The Latin American & Australasian Indigenous Solidarity Gathering,
23-26 October 2008, Melbourne - Australia

For our LAND, our CULTURE, our SOVEREIGNTY... Protecting our planet, defending our communities!

Our Call>> The Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET), Friends of the Earth (FOE) in conjunction with other solidarity organisations will be hosting a gathering for Indigenous and non-Indigenous activists who are supporting Indigenous resistances and struggles.

We hope to bring together activists, indigenous leaders and communities from Aotearoa (New Zealand), Great Turtle Island (North America), the Pacific Islands, and our Indigenous brothers and sisters from Latin America, as well as from the Aboriginal nations of Australia.

This is a time of great struggle for Indigenous peoples. On September 13th 2007, the governments of Canada, the United States, New Zealand and Australia voted against the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which calls on countries to give more control to tribal peoples over the land and resources they traditionally possessed, and to return confiscated territory, pay compensation, or just say “sorry” for all the abuses.

It is not hard to see why. New Zealand’s government has just unleashed its anti-terror security forces on Maori activists in New Zealand, while the Australian government reinvaded Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory under the guise of “child” protection. Both these governments use their influence in the Pacific to open up communal lands in Aboriginal nations as well as Pacific Island nations to Australian and Canadian mining interests.

Throughout the Americas, from Great Turtle Island down through Latin America, from the Tahltan of Canada to the Mapuche of Chile/Argentina, from the Quechua /Aymara  to the Kulin, Wotjobaluk, Mara and Kurnai Nations of Australia in the south, Indigenous peoples are under greater pressure than ever from multinational corporations’ interests (mining, forestry, fuel), free trade agreements and the security apparatus of settler governments, determined to finally put an end to centuries of struggle against dominant elites and against economic rationalism in the form of neoliberal capital policies.

Indigenous peoples are fighting back, organising, and teaching new generations what they have learned from hundreds of years of unending struggle against land expropriation, exploitation, assimilation and the various attempts to wipe them out from our planet.

Gathering (Encuentro)/Conference Contents>>

The Gathering (Encuentro) aims to build bridges of struggle, friendship and collaboration between Indigenous and grassroots organisations throughout Latin America and Australasia.

During the first two days of the Gathering (October 23 and 24) there will be a welcome to country and a public meeting. The second two days (October 25 and 26) will feature plenary sessions, workshops, documentary films, photo exhibitions, stalls and other activities.

Participants from Australia and overseas will explore the questions of WHY and HOW we resist and struggle to protect our planet and defend our communities, and WHAT we propose as Indigenous people and supporters from grassroots and community organisations to achieve social transformation..

Topics to be discussed include:
Genocide suffered by Aboriginal nations
Autonomous struggles
Ancestral rights to land and culture
Sovereignty and the global order
Sovereignty and neo-liberal policies
Land sovereignty and nation
Aboriginal control of Aboriginal affairs
Human rights/Aboriginal rights
Fighting racism
Peace
Treaty or/and reconciliation, and
Other topics presented by Gathering participants.

Our idea is to be open and inclusive to ideas and discourses supporting Indigenous peoples’ self-determination and grassroots struggles for justice, peace, dignity and democracy from below. We would like to develop the concept of an alliance between Indigenous and non- Indigenous marginalised people as they share similar problems of exclusion, exploitation, racism, repression.

We are inviting individuals and organisations to support this initiative by contributing to our organising fund, and by supporting the Gathering itself when it takes place October 2008.

Costs are significant as there are several international airfares to cover, and therefore any contributions would be appreciated.

If your organisation be able to provide some assistance or be interested to becoming a Gathering supporter or sponsor write to us to P.OBOX 813 North Melbourne, VIC. 3051 or email.

Solidarity Gathering/Encuentro presented by: Latin American Solidarity Network (LASNET) & Friends of the Earth (FOE) In conjunction with: Aboriginal organisations from Victoria and other cities, ANTAR, Union Solidarity, Community Radio 3CR, AISD, MASN, FREE WEST PAPUA, FAIRWEAR CAMPAIGN, Pro-Bolivia Sydney, Chilean popular and Indigenous Network, Colombia Solidarity Network, Colombia demand Justice Campaign and Others...

ISSUES AT PLAY

6pm-8pm, 8th November.
Northcote Town Hall.

A workshop, called “Issues at Play”, at the Northern Notes Writer’s Festival, will include a reading by professional actors of 1hr-length play “Peccadilloes” by local emerging playwright Judy Doubas. It tells the story of one woman’s journey through domestic violence.

After the play reading, an open forum with the actors, writer and the CEO of Domestic Violence Crisis Services, Jean Cameron will be conducted to discuss the relevance and effectiveness of the genre of playwriting to explore and inform an audience about often contentious social issues.

There will be an opportunity to discuss both the issues presented and to make comparisons with other forms of writing such as journalistic articles and essays, novels and short stories.  These questions will be posed. Can a play shape public opinion, awake emotions, stimulate thought and enlighten as well as amuse and entertain? Does showing and not just telling engage an audience/ reader more profoundly and on a deeper level?

Judy Doubas has been passionate about theatre all her life. From dabbling in acting and directing, she began writing plays three years ago, to reflect upon and give meaning to, contemporary social issues that effect us all. She writes with a serious intent and some humour.  ‘Peccadilloes’ is her first full length play, but there are more in the making. Her ten minute plays have been produced at Footscray Arts Centre, Dantes and Dandenong Short and Sweet Festival. Her ten minute play “Black Eyed Susan”, a black comedy about cancer, is being produced at the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio, as one of the Top 20 in the Short and Sweet Festival in December. She has a Diploma in Drama and a Diploma in Education Drama/English.

The actors at play are Bobbi-Lea Dionysis, Stefan Cooper-Fox, Nick Fox, Rosie Rodiadis and Scott Mc Ateer.

“Issues at Play” is supported by NNWF, Women’s Health in the North, Darebin Domestic Violence Project and Domestic Violence Crisis Service.

ImageHelp raise money for 3CR's Connolly Association and see Hunger, a new film about IRA hunger striker, Bobby Sands.

For six weeks in 1981, Bobby Sands went without food in an action initiated to demand that IRA prisoners be treated as political prisoners, not criminals.

Directed by Turner Prize-winning artist Steve McQueen, Hunger takes an uncompromising look at life inside the Maze prison and the last six weeks in Bobby Sands' life. After 66 days without food, Sands died at the Maze prison in Northern Ireland at the age of 27.
