Following Hurricane Sandy, New York City was found to have violated the rights of 900,000 of its residents with disability by failing to provide for their evacuation during emergencies, through so-called ‘benign neglect’. Now researchers at Central Queensland University are working on a project to identify the vulnerability of people with disability to impacts of climate change in their region.
Care International is also looking at the effects of climate change on vulnerable communities, through the Where the Rain Falls project, which tracks the impacts of low rainfall in developing countries, including food insecurity, migration and dispersal of families.
