Shapelle Corby arrived back in Australia earlier this week. One news source reports that “celebrity agent Max Markson believes public demand for Corby stories is undimmed”, while a letter to the editor in a major morning daily makes this point: “She is a convicted drug offender, being treated like a celebrity. I am dismayed at the level to which we stoop in the name of news. I couldn’t care less about Ms Corby”. Cultural studies lecturer, Anthony Lambert from Macquarie University looks at the bigger picture and political and cultural implications of the Shappelle saga for national identity.
