Beyond the 1/4 Acre Block

Beyond the 1/4 Acre Block, David O' Meara Sunday 7 - 7.30AM

Social justice issues in rural areas of Australia.

In English.

This weekly interview program focuses on social justice issues in rural areas of Australia. Essentially, the program zeroes in on issues of disadvantage.

Each week an interview guest discusses a particular aspect of disadvantage. Occasionally, this will involve the guest talking about a particular individual experiencing disadvantage. More commonly, the focus will be on a group experiencing disadvantage.

Groups which appear from time to time on the program are newly arrived immigrants, young people, women and those living with mental illness or physical disabilities. Then again, from time to time, the emphasis will be on the disadvantage experienced by Australians living in rural areas in general. Often, this will take the form of highlighting shortages of services taken for granted by people living in metropolitan areas.

In the past, this has included interviews concerning shortages of such personnel as GPs, nurses, medical specialists, psychologists, dentists and so on. Questions of disadvantage cry out for a positive response. Examples of measures devised to overcome particular instances of disadvantage feature in the weekly interview from time to time.

The program has been running since 1998. Over that period, hundreds of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds have appeared on the program as interview guests.
